Working with a publisher
The client: The team at Edify Publishing were kind enough to take a chance on me when I was quite new.
How I helped: I checked the text for typos, punctuation and grammar. I also spent a long time on the formatting, trying to ensure consistency. I did manage to catch a wrong date which could have caused some real problems, ‘1981’ should’ve been ‘1881’.
The experience: I was so excited, terrified and honoured to be proofreading for a well-established publisher. There was no pressure put on me as regards deadlines, support was easily available, and I felt empowered by their trust in me. I look forward to working with them in the future.
Working with an independent author
The client: Aliscia contacted me after seeing my post on the NZIBS forum, we chatted about her project and agreed to work together.
How I helped: I worked on Aliscia’s stories to fix spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I helped with tense mix-ups and encouraged a child’s voice where appropriate.
The experience: Aliscia is a dream to work with as she’s so open to suggestions whilst still maintaining the integrity of her stories.
I wish her all the success in the world as she is a talented author who is passionate about her work and about encouraging children’s awareness of their ecological responsibilities. I know she’ll be a name to remember in the not-so-distant future. I’m sure we’ll be working together again soon.
