A friend just sent me a hilarious video of someone trying to get to grips with past tense verbs. It got me thinking about whether we’re all extremely smart for learning these rules, or complete idiots for not rising up and demanding that someone fix this insanity. Some past tenses are completely straightforward and follow simple rules, but so many just seem to have made up their own rules for fun. Native English speakers don’t notice these quirks as we’ve learnt them from birth, but I really pity those trying to learn English, as a second or third language, as it’s just painful. For example, pin pinned, sin sinned, win won. Wait a minute, who changed the rules? Match matched, watch watched, catch caught. Why? And don’t get me started on hold held, buy bought, seek sought, and read read. Those of us who work with language everyday deserve a medal for surviving this craziness. And let’s not forget those whose job it is to teach this complex and sometimes nonsensical language to others. With over a billion English speakers in the world, is it time for a language revolution or is this crazy, mixed up language just a great insight in to the past that should be treasured for its uniqueness?
